Math moments

When we are engaged in children's play we are able to capture those math moments that happen inside our classroom and during our outdoor play. Our room is one big learning centre where strands of mathematical discovery are continually being woven. Children learn to make sense of their world through everyday experiences.

Take a look at this pattern. Some excellent fine motor skills at work to make this 3 colour pattern worm.

Using measurement and some engineering skills to create a dress. Our students are developing an understanding that materials of different weights require a variety of strategies to keep them up, and looking fashionable of course.

Putting together a road. The beginning of a creation.

Taking things apart with tools. Serious work done here. The students were quite interested in all the components found inside the pieces of technology.  Fine motor skill development is happening here in an interesting way as the students use a variety of tools to remove all the wires and pieces. Some interesting questions were presented by the students. Why different colour wires? Why are their magnets in here?

Making sure she has enough fish sticks for everyone that has been invited for lunch. Yummy!

Making survey's. Students are gathering information and recording their findings. The presentations ranged from fruits to shoes. Information on most and least, and math concepts on ordering numbers are happening everyday throughout the room.  Jacob is wondering which activity you prefer?

This is an elaborate bridge for our train. Students her are developing problem solving skills and spacial awareness as they select the right sizes of blocks to meet their needs.

Habitats are changing everyday. Today their is a turtle hiding under the grass area. This led to an interesting discussion about what else the turtle needs to survive.  Where is the water?

Students are working together here to decide on what they want their creation to be and divide up the work. These activities promote language development as well as problem solving skills. Math concepts including numbers and shapes are shared as they build. Following the plan on the smartboard our architects go to work.

Playing games is a great way to develop their understanding of numeration skills. Here the students are working on tally marks, adding up scores, and assigning ordinals. Who is first, second, and so on.

Visiting the guessing jar. Neil and Gavin are fierce competitors to win the at the guessing jar. Students are estimating the amount of items in the guessing jar. They are developing skills to form numbers correctly as well as an understanding of numeracy and quantity.
