Following Shawn in France on his blog

We had the opportunity to Skype with our friend Shawn again this week and we learned he has his own blog in France. We decided to check it out to see what exciting things he's been doing with his family while overseas.
While on Shawn's blog we saw pictures of some real castles that he had visited recently. This sparked a great interest in what real castles look like, and the children decided to investigate by building their own using the big blocks.
They referred back to the pictures of the castles from Shawn's blog for reference while building their own.
This inspired rich discussion as the children compared their castle to the one on the blog, and used rich vocabulary to describe the process of building and the parts of their castle.

  1. Hi, this is Shawn's Mom. Your castle-building is AMAZING and exciting and I LOVE the roof on top. Shawn is not awake yet, but I'll be sure to show him and you can look for a comment from him soon.

Keep on having fun! Shawn misses you!

  2. Hi this is from Shawn "When I get back I'm going to build a castle too and dress up like builders and use nails and hammers from the construction site to make it for real and make sure the castle doesn't have any cracks (old castles have lots of cracks)!! Then we'll be ready to build a drawbridge!! And then dress up like kings and queens and tasters (they taste things before the king and queen eat them)! So goodbye - I can't wait to build and make sure there are turrets in the castle too. I'm going to send you a picture of what it looks like... see you later alligator!!

  3. This is from Shawn "I'm so excited that I'm going to come home and build a castle with everyone... we can use the construction stuff and hammers and build castles for 69 years so they don't have any cracks (old castles have lots of cracks) and we can build a drawbridge and everything - it'll be sooo amazing. It was so nice at school and I miss all you guys. Love Shawn
