Polar Vortex Won't Stop Us!

We were certainly NOT going to let the blizzards and extreme cold weather stop us from playing with the snow!  Oh how we love bringing the outdoors into the wonderful world of kindergarten!

Things in the sensory bins don't just happen.  We make sure to make things exciting, and also to reflect the interests and needs of the children with the materials that we place there.

The natural choice for our bin this week was snow. Children were around the snow bin all day long!  They excitedly grabbed their mittens and dug right in.

Snowmen were built. Characters went skiing, sledding and made snow angels.

Squirt bottles filled with red, yellow and blue water turned the snow a rainbow of colours.

Our large windows gave us a full view of the blowing, blizzardy snow. We noticed the thermometer hanging at the window.  Hmmmm... it found it's way over to the snow!  What fun it was to watch the red line go lower and lower!
Where would it stop?

How could we get the red to go back up?  We filled a glass container with very warm water.  The red line flew up the thermometer!  The children quickly realized that the numbers at the top of the thermometer told us when something was hot and the numbers at the bottom told us when something was cold.

The thermometer went back and forth, over and over again, between the warm water and the cold snow.

Mother Nature delivered us a blast... so we had one!
