Literacy is so much more than reading and writing.
Literacy is alive when children make a choice in what they want to know. It is supported by teachers and families who respond to those interests and engage the child in conversation as they read together. It is meaningful when children tell other children what they now know.
Literacy is alive when children take a favourite story and retell it to each other.
Together, they decide how the story is retold. They take turns as they handle books and turn pages.
Literacy is alive when children want to give a message to others. Perhaps they write a 'do not touch' sign for work in progress or write about something that has excited them!
Literacy is alive when the writing and the reading is meaningful!
