Daily Moments - The Learner

This is how our day always begins.

Allowing the children time to explore self-chosen activities sets their mood for the rest of their day. The children communicate with each other and with their teachers. These morning activities vary as the educators discuss the needs of the children. This activity time lasts for about 30 minutes before the children move into learning groups. 

In the wonderful world of kindergarten, what we know developmentally about children is that sitting for long periods of time in a whole group is not best practice. When we break off into smaller groups we support individual developmental levels of the children in our program. This provides more opportunities for meaningful experiences for both the children and the educators. The educators become co-learners with the children. 

In the wonderful world of kindergarten we have a large block of uninterrupted play. This time comes after our time in learning groups. During this time, so many things are happening: planned and unplanned small groups, one-on-one interactions with children and educators, open and free choice play and project work. The flow of our reflective program remains flexible as it meets the needs of the individual learners in many ways.
