Weaving

We all have our own life to pursue,
Our own kind of dream to be weaving,
And we all have the power to make wishes come true,
As long as we keep believing.
~ Louisa May Alcott ~

When the interest from finger knitting continued, Miss Wilkins thought about introducing another yarn activity to the children. She created small cardboard looms for the children and began to introduce the idea of weaving to them.
Some friends got the knack right away and they were able to help other friends.
Under, Over, Under, Over
Does that sound familiar?
Just like finger knitting, the actions of weaving are a pattern!

We wondered if the children would make patterns in the colours as they weaved their yarn.

Pulling the yarn tight, made the weaving squeeze together.
The bottom strings needed to be tied so the weaving strings wouldn't fall out.
Some of the weaving was very colourful.

The nicest part of the weaving activity was getting the chance to do it again and again!

Beautiful tulips

Spring is in the air! These beautiful tulips gave the children a wonderful opportunity to do some sketching in our art studio.

The Making of a Puppet Play

With some direction to a purposeful use of their creative skills, some friends were invited to develop a puppet play. With a goal in mind, the girls began their story.
They presented a haunted Halloween story, complete with set design and costumes!

The puppets were brought to the art studio and costumes were designed for each of the characters.
The costumes were decorated with the parts that the character had in the story the children were creating.

The story developed as the children worked on the costumes. Chatter was lively as the story took shape.

The story took many directions. Each of the children added to the story in a different way as they created the costumes their characters were wearing.

More children came to the art studio and brought puppets to create costumes for.

Collaboration continued throughout the morning.

Now, many stories were developing.

When it was time for the puppet show, the children told the stories of their own characters part.
The 'Haunted Halloween Puppet Show' was confusing to listen too!

We had a wonderful discussion about puppet shows and stories.
Stories have a setting, characters and a beginning, middle and end.
The 'Haunted Halloween Puppet Show' had a setting. It was a house.
There were characters.
What was the story?
The teachers helped the children to tell their story with words like,
"How does your story begin?"
"Then what happened?"
"What did they do next?"
"How does your story end?"

And the children all sang...
"And that's the end of the story! And that's the end of the story!"

Experimenting With Paint

Experimentation is something that we do very well with in the wonderful world of kindergarten.
When we experiment with the art materials, the children discover new ways to interact with them.

Paint doesn't only need to be spread and mixed with a brush.
Small squeeze bottles were offered with the paint. When pressed very softly, the air was not strong enough to push the thick paint. When pressed strong and quickly, the air from the squeeze bottles pushed the paint on the paper.

Some of the children used the spoons to push the paint on the paper, then used the squeeze bottles.

Some of the children pushed the bottles right into the paint and then watched small bubbles of paint pop as they pushed the air from the squeeze bottles.

Addison decided that the eye droppers might work better. They also push air out when they are squeezed.

Colours mixed together to become new colours.
Many of the children smeared colours together with the backs of the spoons, their fingers and the tips of the squeeze bottles and eye droppers.

It was very interesting to see what colours were revealed underneath other colours.

Donovan tried to squeeze paint into the droppers and push it out onto their paper.

Experimenting with paint is always fun...
and gives us all fresh ideas!
