Naming The Chicks!

Many children had drawn pictures of the new chicks and wrote names for the chicks they had drawn.
Sooo...you can guess what the next morning's sign in would be!
Children signed their names in the columns of their favourite new chick names.
Jacob and Nancie worked together to count the total number of votes in each of the columns.
The 2 JK friends then wrote the number in each column.
There was a discussion about the survey for the new chicks names.

Which column had the most number of votes?
Which column had the least number of votes?
Which column had the same or equal number of votes?
How many more votes did the name 'Spokrs' (Sparkles) get than 'Cala'?
How man less votes did the name 'Tie' get vs. the name 'Tiny'?

After all that fun math talk...
let us introduce you to our new chicks!

Our chicks have a new home

The time had to come sooner or later, that our chicks would outgrow the wonderful world of kindergarten.  It was a sure sign that the time had come when they were trying to fly out of their refrigerator box home!!!  Mr. Bergen had been generous in giving us these eggs to hatch, and knew we would take good care of the chicks until it was time for them to return to their own habitat... Mr. Bergen's farm.

It was interesting to talk about Mr. Bergen's farm. The children heard words like 'county', 'country' and 'rural'. We talked about the large cylinder shaped building with a cone shaped roof, called a silo and how it is used to store grain. We talked about the barns and the fields and how a farmer uses them.
Then we talked about our chick's new home in their chicken coop.

Our chicks were a bigger than some of their brothers and sisters. Momma Hen and Daddy Rooster were happy to see their chicks come home!

We can't wait to see them again! Mr. Bergen will bring our chicks to visit us when they are as big as their Mom and Dad! Hmmm.... wonder if we'll recognize them?!

The Chicks Have Arrived!

Well, our kindergarten family has grown by 4 new additions. We were all so excited to discover cracked egg shells and baby chicks in the incubator. We even heard a chick chirping before it came out of it's egg. It was so anxious to meet us!

It was very hard work for the chicks to break through their shells. They rested when they came out of their eggs. They were tiny and curled up and wet.
The children couldn't wait to wish our new chicks a 'Good Morning' greeting.

Two chicks greeted the world while waiting for their friend to join them.
Good work, little chicky. Look at how tiny your wings are!

These are some 'Happy Birds'!
Recording the chicks gave us the chance to watch what was happening and have a wonderful, rich discussion as we viewed the video later.
Time to move them to a new home made special just for them. The children decorated and adorned the chicks home with welcome messages.

Wonderful messages, a blueprint, a  heat lamp, a soft nesting area, food and water... amazing!

Welcome to your new home chickies. Now it's time to consider some names.

Ask your child for daily updates about our chicks. They are noticing the changes that are happening every day as the chicks grow. We are talking about the chicks when we gather. We are talking about chick homes and people homes, hens and roosters, other animals that hatch and how things change.

How many books can sit on top of an egg?

The children had the opportunity to see first hand how strong an egg really is. We did an experiment with books and four eggs. So how many books did the eggs hold before they actually cracked? You will have to ask your child that question to find out the answer.
One thing is for sure... boy oh boy are eggs ever strong!
