Surprise! We have babies!

"Miss! Miss! Look!!! There's babies in the terrarium!"

Sure enough, we gazed into the terrarium and it was speckled with eensy, weensy, tiny insects.
A praying mantis egg sack had hatched.
We found it was awfully difficult to count how many insects had hatched, since they were hopping and moving all about.
We observed that there were more than 10, 20 30, or 40.
Maybe there was even more than 100!

We decided to 'Zoomie' in on the baby praying mantis' and learn all that we could.

The children engaged in many interesting conversations. The discussed what they noticed and what they thought.

They continued to revisit the terrarium.

What changes were occurring as each day passed?

What did the insects need in their habitat? What could they eat? Did they want to crawl on a stick?

Curiosity and wonder led the children to want to know more.

The baby praying mantis' are delicate.

Ms. Lecoq and the children researched information about the praying mantis babies.
Girl praying mantis' have more lines than boy ones.

The children compared how many lines the babies had.

Kids National Geographic has some interesting facts and cool pictures of praying mantis'.
There are a few great kid friendly sites that have many interesting facts about praying mantis'

The children love letting the tiny creatures crawl on their hand and watch them travel up their sleeves.
They enjoyed sharing their discovery with Ms. Sion, who had come to visit.
Ms. Sion knew so much about the praying mantis'!

The children have discovered that praying mantis' love to eat fruit flies...and maybe each other!
As they grow, they are shedding their old skin.
They like to hop.
The babies thought it was Springtime because it was warm inside.
Many more egg sacks are attached to the plants near the dry river rock bed in front of the school.
That's what we know....so far!

The Season of Giving Continues

Not what I have, but what I do
is my kingdom.
~ Thomas Carlyle ~

A tree such as this deserved more than a side of the road pick up.
Having been adorned with scarves, mittens, hats, socks and gifts for those in need, this was no ordinary tree.
And so it continues to honour the season of giving. Venturing back to the outdoors, on our rooftop garden.
No longer filled with strings of popcorn and lights and the gifts of charitable acts,
our Kindergarten Giving Tree has returned to that which it knows best.
Nature.
Happily accepting gifts for it's winter friends from the loving hands of the children in the wonderful world of kindergarten.
Once again, the Kindergarten Giving Tree will provide home and food for it's fine feathered and furry friends.

A Giving Gallery

You may recall from our children last year that art was donated to
The Windsor Regional Cancer Centre.

Last week, our teachers were able to visit the centre and reconnect with Ms. Brockenshire and Nurse Maggie. They were as excited as we were to share what the children's art has meant for the people visiting the centre and the staff that works there.

Nurse Maggie and Ms. Brockenshire posed in front of one of the works of art.
All of the art work was framed by Nancy Johns Gallery.
Some pieces were mounted.

Some pieces were matted and framed.

All of the pieces were honoured in a very special way
 and treated with great care.

Several pieces of art are grouped in each of the three treatment rooms.

There are four pieces of art in the newly named Dragonfly Room.
Nancy Johns decided these should be pinned.
It looks like they are floating.

Nurse Maggie and Ms. Brockenshire said that the patients like to look at the art so they can focus on something that makes them feel good when they are getting their
 medicine or procedures.

They also said that there is another room that has no art in it.
Can you guess what our children will be doing in the art studio?!

Very Special Art for the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre

The children in the wonderful world of kindergarten have been asked
to do something very special.
They are making art for the treatment rooms at The Windsor Regional Cancer Centre.
These rooms need a cheery, happy touch.
Maybe some children's art will be just the thing to soothe an ailing spirit.
Can you guess what the children used the marble paper for that they had created?
The colours were just perfect for butterflies and dragonflies and flowers!
We are continuing to create art for the Cancer Centre and will be
presenting it to them very soon.
