A Log's Life

An investigation has begun.
Tiny insects continue to emerge in our art studio.
They must be coming from somewhere in the area!

David believes he has discovered where the insects have been living.
He saw one of the insects crawling on a log.
The log had a hole.

We researched the insect and Mrs. St. Onge found out it is called the Red Headed Ash Borer
They have hatched inside the wood stumps and are starting to investigate the world.
Just like us.
They like to camoflauge themselves to look like a wasp, but they don't sting.
Mostly, these insects just like wood.

David thinks they like to live in the dark.

We began to take the bark off of the stumps and found trails and trails of lines.
How did they make the trails?

What do they like to eat?

How strong are they?

Why are their heads red?

We'll be reading a book called A Log's Life
Click to see what a real story about a log's life.

The wonder continues!

Take Me Apart

Our newest centre has had many visitors.
We're calling it the Take Apart centre.

Can you guess what the children are taking apart?
Many screws taken out revealed wires and green boards with many silver dots inside.
Dust needed to be brushed away to see what was under and inside.

Children decided which tool would work best for the job they intended to do.

Did you guess it was a computer?

We're saving all sorts of parts to remake new inventions...but that will be another story!

Our Great Outdoors

They recall those "places of initiation", in the words of naturalist Bob Pyle, where they may have first sensed with awe and wonder the largeness of the world seen and unseen.
~ Richard Louv ~

Our great outdoors...a place where memories are made.
Where the warmth of joyful memories are awakened.
Where solitude is an opportunity for discovery.
Where possibilities are as endless as the clear blue sky.
Where stories come to life.
Where we see big and notice small.
Where a good book beckons for an attentive reader.
Where shape and colour inspires creativity.
Where buildings take shape in the hands of junior architects.
Where curiosity leads to discovery and kindness is offered to the smallest of creatures.
Where seasons bring surprisingly fun gifts.
Where leaves blanket the cool ground.
Where a wild leaf rumpus...

 ...must ensue!
Where the seeds of ideas take root.
Where sketching alights the mathematical brain.

Where an inquisitive gaze is a question and a statement all at the same time.
Where shadows tell time.
Where freedom is reflected in choice, thinking and the conversations it inspires.
Where gathering happens in groups...
...and in baskets.
Where living...
...takes on deeper meaning.
Where awareness of the circle of life begins.

 Where trails are blazed.

This Little Light of Ours

Home to discovery and creativity, the light table is an interesting place to visit.
We've added mirrored reflection to the light table.
There is much building, discussion and story-telling and something else happening.
Can you spot the math?
