Weaving

We all have our own life to pursue,
Our own kind of dream to be weaving,
And we all have the power to make wishes come true,
As long as we keep believing.
~ Louisa May Alcott ~

When the interest from finger knitting continued, Miss Wilkins thought about introducing another yarn activity to the children. She created small cardboard looms for the children and began to introduce the idea of weaving to them.
Some friends got the knack right away and they were able to help other friends.
Under, Over, Under, Over
Does that sound familiar?
Just like finger knitting, the actions of weaving are a pattern!

We wondered if the children would make patterns in the colours as they weaved their yarn.

Pulling the yarn tight, made the weaving squeeze together.
The bottom strings needed to be tied so the weaving strings wouldn't fall out.
Some of the weaving was very colourful.

The nicest part of the weaving activity was getting the chance to do it again and again!

Weaving outdoors

A fun activity to try that is great for strengthening fine motor control and hand-eye coordination is weaving. We had some beautiful, iridescent ribbon that the children were invited to weave in and out of the fence around our play yard. It was a fun and creative activity and helped to beautiful our space. The fence became our canvas!

Taking The Classroom Outside

The weather has been so amazing and we have been fortunate to have such a mild autumn so far! We've been making the most of our time outside and bringing many of the inside learning activities outside in our large play area and the big hill and backyard.

This week the children did a lot of writing outside! They recorded how many different objects they could find.

They drew amazingly detailed pictures together on the easels and enjoyed read-aloud stories.

They explored straw and pumpkins and created some delicious autumn inspired dishes!

We took weaving frames to the hill and the children wove with natural materials. This is great for fine motor and hand-eye coordination... and it's really fun!

Building outside is a fun experience too! The fresh air and large space inspire imagination. The possibilities for the children are endless!
