The Mitten

We recently read The Mitten illustrated by the talented Jan Brett.
It is a Ukranian folktale and Jan Brett has many picture clues throughout the book to help tell the story. A boy loses his white mitten in the snow...
and the mitten has quite an adventure!

Afterwards, the children made our handy dandy play clay. They fashioned many of the characters from the story. The next day, after they had been baked and were good and dry, the children painted the characters they had made.
Now they have their own characters to retell the story of The Mitten over and over again.

Our handy dandy play clay is the familiar salt, flour and water mixture that the
children can make by themselves.
We brought a scale out to help with the measuring.
Each of the children tried to measure the same amount of dough.
The book was always near for the children to refer to.
Soon, animals were taking shape.
Carson enjoys to work in miniature.

The tray was filled over again to accommodate the many animals that were being made.

The cover also became filled with sculpted characters
awaiting their turn to be baked and dried.
The next step was to paint the characters. Using colours that the children saw in the book and small paint brushes, the artists set to work on the fine details of their work.
Emmy made sure that the boy character was just right.
This was an exciting way to become familiar with the story of The Mitten!
We are wondering if The Hat, also by Jan Brett, will have
similarities or differences to The Mitten.
What do you think is the same and different?

Nice Work!

Given the opportunity to follow their thinking, the children become so
invested in what they do.

Alex was inspired by another friend who had written our daily message.
Alex gave us all a good riddle with many clues and several letters to fill in.

Dear Frends

Ryan and Jun are traveling to places unknown and have made a picture of their vehicle.
Designers Kate, Addison, Leah and Alex are busy creating the latest in fashion.
Noah is constructing a home for his animals.
Alex decides to accessorize her outfit.
Aiden has sculpted with plasticine and computer and printer parts.
Jun, Isaac and Ryan used small tubes, loose parts and the bowls they came in to make and decorate a tower. They want the teacher to take a picture of their wonderful work!

When Mrs.Brent is away the shaving cream comes out to play!

Poor Mrs. Brent!
She never gets to take part in any activities that have scent.
Mrs. Brent is allergic to scented products.
Thank goodness flowers come from nature and their scent is not processed!

But....
when Mrs. Brent was away at meetings for two days...
we had two days filled with shaving cream fun!

Colours mixed through the shaving cream in the most interesting ways.
Swirls of colour that were intense and vibrant and gave way to slight and light.
The colours mixed and mingled together to create new colours.
Shades and hues describe the same colour family.
However...
playing with shaving cream isn't only about colours.
It also smells so perfumey and feels so soft!
Slippery and slidey.
Fingers travel through and the light reveals a design of movement.
Great green globs drop gradually.

Smooshy silky satiny shaving cream.

Spying a new surface!

Revealing reflection.
High and low and wherever hands can go.

Green foamy whirls inspire a new idea.
What will stick and stay?

Art and free expression.
Scented sensory super sensational shaving cream.

Mrs. Brent smiled the biggest smile!
