These beautiful Fall days have given us so many opportunities to be outdoors. The children really enjoyed painting outdoors while listening to the sounds of nature and taking in the beautiful green space we have around our playground.

In The Kitchen
What do you do with a large basket of apples? Make applesauce of course! The children engaged in a rich cooking experience this week by making applesauce together in the kitchen!
Cooking is a great way to help children use oral language and math. They learn about steps in a process and make a connection to good eating habits.
Most children are drawn to cooking experiences and welcome the chance to be included in such a fun activity!
The best part about cooking? Eating what we made of course!
Writing Happens Everywhere
The wonderful thing about learning through play is that there are endless opportunities for literacy. Encouraging children to explore writing in a safe and supportive manner helps them to see themselves as capable. It makes writing an enjoyable experience and one that they engage in frequently. In our program children have the opportunity to write everywhere; outdoors on easels and chalkboards, together on large pieces of paper, manipulating magnetic letters to spell familiar words, using sidewalk chalk, signing up at sharing time and even documenting their own work!

Preserving Nature
Our children have been so interested in exploring the changes occurring outside. We have been encouraging their observations of fall and asking them to share what they see happening in the world around us. On Monday afternoon we used a large easel with sticky contact paper attached and invited the children to help us create a 'signs of fall' nature collage. Children hunted in the playground and found objects they thought represented the changing signs of fall.

The collage turned into a great problem solving experience as children explored why some objects stuck to the paper (e.g., leaves) and others did not (e.g., rocks). They realized that the size and shape of the objects needed to work together in order to make everything fit together. What a great opportunity for math and science!
Our collage is now hanging in the window of the classroom, reminding us of the beauty found outdoors!
