FightIng Island

Last Monday two of our classes had the opportunity to visit Fighting Island. Fighting Island was a dumping spot for the by product of automotive glass manufacturing many years ago. BASF purchased the island and has been working to reclaim the land and sustain healthy plants and animals. Field trips with local children help with this endeavour.

The boat ride over was a favourite part of the field trip for many!

The children looked for animals tracks in the fields and made a plaster print of the track they found. These went home with the children at the end of the trip.

Nature walks were a big part of our day. Children were given field guides to help them find a variety of leaves and backpacks to store their treasures. These came back to school with us for exploration at the science centre.

The children were able to scoop pond water and analyze it using high powered microscopes. Some even projected the image onto a large white screen. Although the frogs, toads, and snakes were hibernating and hard to find, there were many little organisms still living in the water.

What a wonderful trip! Thank you to all volunteers who accompanied us for this great day!

Exploring Spiderwebs with Print Making

The children have been exploring spiders and spider webs. We asked them to create their own 'web' stamps using yarn, blocks, and black paint.

Finger painting

Finger painting is always such a great sensory experience for children. It's fun to get one's hands dirty and really explore art materials.  The children had the opportunity to finger paint using autumn colours last week.

Halloween Fun

Boy oh boy Halloween was fun in our classroom! We had special activities and events all day to celebrate! We dressed up in costumes....

Decorated our doors by painting huge pictures...

Read scary stories in the reading area...

Decorated cupcakes in the kitchen...

Danced to some spooky music in the gym...

Went on a Halloween scavenger hunt...

Created spooky costumes in the dress shop...

We can't wait until next year!

Pumpkin Time

Exploring pumpkins is always so much fun in the fall! On Halloween day the children were invited to help create Jack-o-lanterns with some help from an adult.

The pulp and pumpkin 'goop' was added to our usual playdough mixture and was such a wonderful sensory experience to play with and explore!

It was also interesting to put the pumpkin seeds and pulp on our light table for exploration.

Sticky, sticky, ooey, gooey fun!

The children also created their own recipes and 'pumpkin soup' by adding water and other ingredients to the pumpkin seeds and pulp in the kitchen!
