The City Inquiry

~ Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because and only when, they are created by everybody. ~ Jane Jacobs

The creation of Kindergarten City actually began at the writing centre. Chance, Jack and Ricky were writing books and telling stories. Chance had drawn pictures, which he stapled together and told the story of two friends who had no city. This group of young authors had such interesting stories to tell! The idea of cities began popping up all throughout the wonderful world of kindergarten.
Noticing this ongoing interest in cities, Ms. Bennett and Ms. Marcoux's group began to talk about cities during their circle time.  They talked about the kinds of things you find in cities, they talked about maps, they talked about stores and businesses and places to go. They decided to build a city!

Cardboard boxes and tubing, paint, tape and glue were used like brick and mortar.

Restaurants, homes, apartments, parks, roads, trees, windows, grocery stores.... the children knew so much about cities and the community they live in!

The children thought and talked about the shapes they needed to build their structures. Just like Rome, this city was not built in a day!  Children came back and forth for days and weeks, to Kindergarten City.  They created, they changed, they added, they displayed, they played.

Finally, much of the play and work was winding down. Kindergarten City was going to be displayed for everyone to marvel at. Brynna noticed that something was missing... something that she thought every city needed. She busied herself in the art studio, then presented us with a the flag of Canada. She often walks by Kindergarten City and waves the flag.
Today the city... tomorrow the world!
